Project Description

Catholic Women Speak gave me a window back into the complex, diverse, exciting space of what it can mean to be a Catholic.

I first heard of Catholic Women Speak through one of the early members who had just been published in the collection of essays by the same name.

I was feeling especially betwixt-and-between as a Catholic woman – I was finishing my doctorate as one of very few Catholics at a progressive, Protestant seminary while also working at a Catholic parish in a different part of the country, unsure of how carefully I needed to hide my more progressive theologies and how to meet like-minded women in what felt to me to be a very traditional space.

Catholic Women Speak gave me a window back into the complex, diverse, exciting space of what it can mean to be a Catholic and gave me the reassurance I needed to bring my best self to my parish job (Bible study on Song of Songs, anyone?).

As a researcher who focuses especially on Catholic women in young adulthood, this community helps me see the broader, life-long perspective that enriches my personal life as well as my scholarship.

As I stand on the cusp between young adulthood and “regular” adulthood, between newlywed and the hope of new motherhood, I feel surrounded by a universal sisterhood and know that any question I might ask or concern I might raise will be affirmed and held by these women.
